Travel

Lisbon is easily reached by air from many European and a few American, Asian and African cities. At the time of writing, the following airlines fly into Lisbon Airport:

Aer Lingus, Aigle Azur, Air Algérie, Air Canada Rouge, Air Europa, Air France, Air Moldova, Air Transat, Binter Canarias, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Easyjet, Emirates, Germanwings, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa, Luxair, Norwegian, Royal Air Maroc, Ryanair, SATA Internacional, STP Airways, Swiss, TAAG, TACV, TAP Portugal, Transaero, Transavia, Turkish Airlines, Ukraine, United Airlines, US Airways, Vueling.

 

Visas

If you are a national of a Member State of the European Economic Area (European Union Member States plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or a Swiss national, you do not require a visa to enter Portugal and you may stay in the country for an unlimited time.

If you are a national of one of the following countries, you do not require a visa to enter Portugal if the duration of your stay will not exceed 90 days:

Albania*, Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bosnia and Herzegovina*, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Macao, Macedonia*, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro*, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, San Marino, Serbia*, Seychelles, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, United States of America, Uruguay, Venezuela (*biometric passport holders only).

You do require a visa to enter Portugal if you are:

  • A national of any other country not listed above.
  • A national of one of the countries marked with * in the above list and you do not have a biometric passport.

Please contact the nearest Portuguese Consulate and allow plenty of time to process a visa application.

 

Useful information for visitors

  • Portugal is located in the WET/WEST time zone, which is the same as the British Isles. This is one hour earlier than CET/CEST, which covers most of Western/Central Continental Europe, including Spain.
  • The national emergency number is 112.
  • Mains power supply is 230 V, 50 Hz. Plugs should have round pins (types 7/14 and 7/16). Visitors from the British Isles, North America, Australia, New Zealand and the Far East will need adaptors.
  • Tap water is safe to drink (except in small villages and isolated areas).
  • European Economic Area nationals and Swiss nationals should obtain, and bring with them, their European Health Insurance Card. All other nationals are advised to arrange appropriate health insurance cover for the duration of their stay in Portugal.
